Paige Hasaballah, or Delta Venus to her Instagram followers, is a Melbourne-based artist who draws upon her Egyptian cultural heritage and Australian upbringing to create modern, abstract art. The result is a collection of contemporary paintings that can mean so many different things to different people: the sign of a great artist.

In celebration of our latest Adriana Picker-designed limited-edition products – Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition and Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream – we spoke to Paige about her own creative process and how she incorporates the products into her own daily routine.

Tell us about your work and what you do?

I am a visual artist, designer and poet. My work is about the embodiment of light and dark, conscious and subconscious, inner and outer worlds. My aim is to create a space within which people experiencing the work can reflect on themselves.

How did you get into this position?

Looking back on it I can't help but see some very divine timing. My design work kept me working predominantly on computers or electronic devices, so I had a real pull to work in a more tactile space and use my hands. I have always been really drawn to building or creating with different materials. In late 2017, my family lost our grandmother on my Egyptian side. Within a number of days after she passed, I began painting for the first time in my life. Things took off really quickly from there as I began to publicly share what I was creating with others. Now I see myself as a vessel for the work to flow through and into the lives of others.

Describe your process when it comes to your work – how do you tackle a new project?

I hold space within myself for the work to move through me. I think of it as a sort of meditation or prayer. A vision will come to me in a dream or a moment of quiet surrender, I pick up water materials I am pulled to and breathe deeply. The work sort of creates itself, it's just my job to get out of the way.

What challenges do you face in your work?

I think my main challenge is around resisting the natural flow of things. At times I find myself trying to force a piece of art or painting because I think I "should" be doing that. I am yet to force out a piece of work I am happy with. Some days you need to bake a loaf of bread instead or go for a walk in the park or have a glass of wine with a friend. I am constantly reminding myself that magic happens in the flow state.

What do you find most rewarding?

The most rewarding part of the creative process for me is the way it allows me to connect with others. I have connected with so many incredible people across the world through this practice. Hearing the way one of my pieces inspires someone or prompts them to lean into their own power is the most fulfilling part of my practice.

When you’re experiencing a creative block, how do you get out of it?

A year ago, I would have said to push through it. Now my approach is a little more gentle. When I am feeling a creative block, I do something else, I follow the natural flow of my energy. When I am not resisting where it wants to take me, it always brings me back to creating. Some days I just need to detour past a few other things first.

What advice would you give to others who are looking to explore their creativity?

Get started and start with anything. Be playful with it. Try out different mediums. Don't be too attached to any sort of outcome and just see what comes up. You cannot fail in art, but you are certainly cheating yourself out of the pleasure of creation by holding yourself back.

Talk us through how you use your limited edition Jurlique products throughout your day

The Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream has been an absolute lifesaver for me over the past few weeks. I have been restoring furniture outside of my other creative work and all of that sanding really wears your skin down. Each night and morning I put on the hand cream and it gives them new life! I have been spraying the Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition on my face throughout the day as I work. It is the perfect refresher on my skin and gives me that little wake-up call when I am starting to get sluggish.
